10 Attributes of a Professional Software Engineer
A truly professional software engineer stands out from the crowd. Here's what makes them different.

How to Score a Startup
Examine all these points of startup companies and see how they add up.

I have been a professional software engineer since 1987. In my 20-year career I have participated in, or lead, dozens of projects in every role from company president to junior lab tech (and have learned something from each one).

I have researched and embraced current technological trends, but have remained grounded in the sound fundamentals of professional software development that result in high quality and reliable systems. I have found repeated success by focusing on the development of clear and simple interfaces to solid frameworks and foundational systems. My approach emphasizes loosely coupled modules, mutual exclusion, and flexibility in highly maintainable systems resulting in lower long term costs.

I have worked on the development of operating systems and device drivers, embedded RAID controllers and controlled access systems, corporate loyalty programs, large scale distributed transaction systems, etc. My experience has taught me valuable lessons in how to produce high quality software in a productive and efficient manner. I'm a particularly big fan of the guys at The Pragmatic Programmers. They do a great job of enunciating the craftsmanship of truly professional software development.

My areas of expertise are:

  • Data encryption / digital security
  • Web Services
  • Multi-tier Architecture
  • Transaction Processing Systems
  • Internet Applications
  • Network Protocols
  • Embedded Systems

My strongest languages are C and Java though I continue to learn about new languages so as to incorporate good ideas from many sources in my designs and implementations. I am also familiar with, and have written programs using, C++, PHP, Ruby, SQL, REXX, and Perl. I am as comfortable working with Microsoft Windows NT/2000 as any of the many flavors of Unix and Linux.

I'm also proud to be cited as a source in some scholarly research papers!

I am a Practicing Member of the WorldWide Institute of Software Architects and a Sun Certified Programmer for the Java 2 Platform.
